5 Family Friendly Tanzanian Holiday Destinations

What do we look for when we plan a family friendly holiday? Plenty of activities, a wide range of locations to visit and great food are some of the things that come to mind. You can get all this and more in the fabulous country of Tanzania.

  1. Zanzibar and other islands – the island of Zanzibar has the best coastline around. The beaches offer every kind of activity adults and kids would like. Think kayaking, diving, paddle boarding, beach barbeques, kite surfing, and swimming. While the children are at the beach, the elders can enjoy some R&R in a hotel spa or swimming pool. Better still, lounge on the beach and work on your suntan. Enjoy your time in Pemba, one of the popular islands. The sea is gentle at Mafia Island. Take the children to Robondo Island so they can learn about different fish and migratory birds.
  2. Head south – What better way to enjoy your time with family than to embark on a Tanzanian safari? This is an activity for children and adults and wonderful for both. While the northern circuit is wildly popular, it is the south that can offer you a great safari experience- far from the crowds and amazingly immersive. The largest game reserve in Africa is the Selous Game Reserve and it is in the South of Tanzania. There are great animals to see here, including massive packs of wild dogs and great prides of lion. This is great value for money being off the well-beaten track- luxury accommodation and tailor-made safaris are the norm.
  3. Northeast calls- if you want to see a national park with a difference, get to Saadani National Park. This is the only wildlife reserve in the country that borders the sea, in this case the Indian Ocean. You will also find the historical city of Bagamoyo here. It was founded in the 18th century and was an important trading port in the past.
  4. The big names- for this, you will need to head to the Northern sector and make your way to Serengeti, the greatest national park of them all. Fair warning- this is a holiday that will cost you quite a bit, but even with the crowds and the commotion, this is the best place for children to learn about the magnificent animals that call this continent their home.
  5. Mountains- Tanzania is famous for Mt Kilimanjaro. The highest and most famous mountain in Africa is a great visit with family. While it might not be sensible to attempt a hike up this mountain or Mt Meru, unless you’re a family of trekkers and hikers, there are other options too. The Crater Highlands are perfect for a meandering walk.

A few tips to make the most of the trip. Make sure the entire family has taken its vaccinations and has its documentation. Also, while street food is delicious, it might now always be suitable and so exercise caution. Consider making your trip during off-season. It will drastically reduce costs. You may miss out on some sights, but Tanzania offers enough and more for a truly memorable holiday.
